Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of small, sterile, single-use disposable needles into specific points on the body. No medication is used and the risks of acupuncture are low. It is commonly used by Novena to treat muscle pain and rehabilitate injuries. Furthermore, Novena can also use acupuncture to treat any imbalance of energy in the body, such as common colds, skin conditions, or menstrual cycle issues.

Filiform Needle with Tube

Novena is both licensed in Hong Kong and Australia as a Chinese Medicine Practitioner. Before starting the acupuncture process,  she first disinfects the surface of the skin with isopropyl alcohol. Next, she uses filiform needles with a guide tube for acupuncture, so that her fingers never touch the body of the needle. This type of needle handling is the standard practice in Anglo-Saxon countries, which ensures the highest levels of sterility and safety during treatment. This differs from common practice in Asia, where they hold the body of the needle for manual insertion.

Acupuncture needles often remain in place for 20 to 30 minutes, with the application of an infrared heat lamp. The gentle heat from the lamp improves circulation, and accelerates the healing process. Generally, for a single health issue, one to two treatments a week are recommended, and the number of treatments required will depend on the severity of the condition.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a form of Chinese medicine therapy that involves placing cups over the skin to create negative pressure through suction. This technique has also been used in the Middle East for centuries to reduce pain. It is commonly used for back muscle soreness and musculoskeletal injuries, and is a popular technique among professional athletes.

Bloodletting cupping is an advanced form of cupping treatment that involves a superficial needle prick in the skin, then followed by cupping. This technique is used to remove energy blockage from the body, and is suitable for conditions caused by an excess of heat or blood stagnation, such as for acne, heat rash and fluid retention.

Novena sometimes incorporates cupping therapy, bloodletting cupping therapy, and scraping therapy into the acupuncture treatment sessions. These therapy techniques may enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. Novena will explain the techniques and seek consent first, before performing the treatment.
